2022 Joseph River Estate Reserve Chardonnay

Product Info

Our multi award-winning Joseph River Reserve Chardonnay in 2022 was harvested from a single vineyard in Margaret River, fermented and matured in a selection of French oak barrels.

"2022 was a warm year that enabled the Chardonnay to fully ripen and develop great richness. After hand harvest the fruit was cooled before it was whole bunch pressed, then wild fermented, lees stirred and matured in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels". Stuart Pierce, Chief Winemaker

Medium straw with pale lime green rim. Intense butter toast, roasted almonds and white fruits on the nose. The palate offers a dry, soft natural acidity and nuttiness.

AWARDS & REVIEWS:

The Real Review - Aaron Brasher - 93 points

"Lifted and complex aromas of grapefruit pith, struck match, melon skin, grilled nuts, bacon fat and briar. Full-flavoured, rich, creamy, round and layered. Stone fruit, nutty, pithy and complex on the palate. The acidity is bright and crunchy and there's some phenolic grip delivering shape and texture."

Halliday Wine Companion - Jane Faulkner - 95 Points

"At first it seems overwhelmingly good – as in lots of flavour from stone fruit and pink grapefruit to cedary sweet oak and more. Yet the palate seems quite contained and detailed with fine acidity reining everything in. It’s lively and refreshing, moreish and savoury."

Decanter.com - Cassandra Charlick - 94 points

"The nose is full of popcorn, flint, crackly sea sand, gun smoke and Parmesan rind, plus oodles of oak spice and lemon curd laced with frangipane florals. Fruit displays the warmth of the vintage, with ripe stone fruit, lemon pith and custard apple woven among umami green olive brine, driftwood and dried seaweed. Buttery and bold with plenty of winemaking on show, it's balanced by the vineyard’s offering of phenolics, fruit and driven acid. Harvested by hand, whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeasts and matured in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels post-bâttonage, this marches on the right side of the wild side."

The Wine Pilot - Ray Jordan - 93 Points

"This is a classy chardonnay sourced from Margaret River in what was a warm year. The natural fruit richness has been complemented with wide fermentation, regular lees stirring and time in a mix of oaks. Nutty, ripe nectarine aromas engage immediately. The palate displays a trace of struck match complexity with a slightly savoury element. It’s impressive and worth considering for cellaring."  Cellar 6 Years.

The Wine Pilot - Jeni Port - 92 Points

"The sun shone bright in Margaret River in 2022 and the Chardonnay grapes responded producing one perfectly ripe, warm and inviting wine. Rich in aromas of nectarine, yellow peach, spice aplenty, buttered toast, roasted nuts and vanilla pod. Offers a big mouthful of archetypal Marg’s Chardonnay flavour in ripe fruits and fig, spice, vanillin oak, roasted cashew and almond bread. Wine descriptors work overtime such is the energy and flavour intensity to be found here. Warm and inviting in texture and long in length, this almost qualifies for a meal in a glass, or start planning ahead for barbecue roast chicken and you will be just as happy."

The Wine Pilot - Shanteh Wale - 92 Points

"A crackle of sparkler flint, pineapple skin and yellow peach halves. Lemon curd tart, apple crumble and nutmeg. A wash of elevated acidity and a creamy melted butter gloss on the middle palate. Cinnamon buns, baked apple and vanilla sugar on the finish. Richly weighted and generous. This is laden with edibles to the point of decadence. A wine for drinking now and will cellar another 2-4 years. A perfect pairing with roast spatchcock or Sunday chicken dinners, extra gravy."
